Might as well be underwater

It was a warm, springlike afternoon. But wet. I was wearing my raingear, hiding the camera under plastic; my feet were soaked. A pair of dogwalkers passed me carrying a big, black umbrella. Under the shelter of the evergreens, the only sounds were the squelching of my feet in mud and the plopping of big droplets from above; raindrops combined into rainbombs.

Out in the open, water ran down the lichen-coated trunk of a small fir. The pale green lichen was decorated with candy-red sprinkles. Cladonia. I stooped to take photos, hunched over to shield the cameras under my hood.

Actually, two lichens; a bone lichen and the red-topped Cladonia.

Puckered up.

The same scene as #1, 3 seconds later, slightly different angle. Just enough change in the light to show up the green of the sopping-wet Cladonias.

The cameras were wet already. I hid them under the raingear again and hurried away. In the car, I had good drying rags.

Era una tarde primaveral, de temperaturas templadas. Y con una lluvia primaveral. Yo llevaba mi capa impermeable, escondiendo las cámaras bajo plástico; mis zapatos estaban ya empapados. Una pareja con su perro se protegían bajo un paraguas grande y negro. Bajo la sombra del bosque, se oía solamente el chasquido de mis pies en el lodo, y el "plop" de gotas grandes cayendo desde la copa de los árboles; gotas de lluvia combinadas, convertidas en bombas.

Fuera del bosque, agua corría por el tronco cubierto de líquenes de un abeto. El liquen, verde claro, estaba adornado con "sprinkles" de dulce rojo. Cladonia. Me agaché para sacar fotos, protegiendo las cámaras bajo mi capuchón.

1. Son dos líquenes: un liquen "hueso", y las Cladonia con sus apotecios rojos.
2. Como si fueran pintadas con lapiz labial.
3. La misma escena que en la foto #1, 3 segundos más tarde, con un ángulo tantito distinto. Suficiente cambio de luz para que el color verde se haga más intenso.

Las cámaras ya estaban mojadas; las volví a esconder bajo mi capa y regresé al camino, apurándome. En el coche tenía toallas secas.

Ubiquitous

In some areas, every old bit of log or stump or even discarded wood gets covered in these tiny Cladonia sp. lichens. In the mini-forest at Oyster Bay, it's always damp, even in mid-summer; everything near or on the ground is covered in mushrooms, mosses, lichens, and sometimes slime molds. These lichens are growing near the edge of the woods, where some sunlight reaches them; the camera appreciates that.

On a burnt log. Probably lipstick lichen, Cladonia macilenta, with a mix of pixie cup lichens; these have tiny brown fruiting bodies (apothecia).

The tiny scales (squamules) are the first to appear, covering the wood before the fertile clubs show up.

En algunos sitios, cada tocón viejo, cada tronco tirado, aun cada pedazo de madera abandonado termina cubierto de estos líquenes, de varias especies de Cladonia. El bosquecito de Oyster Bay se mantiene húmedo todo el año, hasta en los dias de calor, y el suelo y la madera vieja están completamente cubiertos de hongos, musgos, líquenes, y hasta mohos mucilaginosos. Estos crecen cerca del margen exterior del bosque, donde les llega a tocar la luz, cosa que las cámaras aprecian.

1. En un tronco quemado. Son líquenes Cladonia macilenta, el liquen "lapiz labial", compartiendo el sitio con otros del mismo género, estos de los llamados "copa de hadas"; tienen en el borde de las copas pequeños cuerpos fructíferos color café (apotecios).
2. C. macilenta forma estructuras altas llamadas podecios; en la punta llevan los apotecios rojos.
3. Las escamas a la base son lo primero en aparecer, cubriendo la madera antes de que se levanten los podecios.

Rainy day Cladonias

 Rain, rain, rain. It's what keeps us green. And all wet.

Here's some wet, green lichen on soaking-wet wood.

Cladonia sp. And a few dots of witches' butter.

The two forms of lichen here are all the same species. The tiny "leaves", or squamules, are the first to appear; the tall stalks, or podetia, are the fruiting bodies.

More Cladonia, on a blackened log.

More podetia here. Some with "pixie cup" tops, a couple with the red "lipstick" tips. These may be two distinct species.

And more. These fruiting bodies have neither cups nor red caps.

The weather people are promising us a few hours without rain tomorrow. That would be nice.

Aquí hay unos líquenes Cladonia sp., mojadas y verdes.

1. El liquen tiene dos formas: las escamas, que son la base del liquen, y los tallos, llamados podetia, que son los cuerpos fructíferos. En esta foto también hay unos pequeños hongos anaranjados, los que llamamos mantequilla de brujas.
2. Estos parecen ser dos distintas especies de Cladonia; unos cuyos cuerpos fructíferos llevan tazas, y otros con los sombreritos rojos.
3. Más líquenes, estos sin tazas ni sombreros.

Los meteorológicos nos están prometiendo unas horas sin lluvia para mañana. Bueno sería.

December Happy file folder

 And now we do have snow! While I wait for the snowplows to come by*, I'm digging into the "Things that Make me Happy" file again.

Snow makes me happy, so I'll start off with this, from last year:

Snow piled at the edge of the Elk Falls parking lot. Higher than my car.

Ice crystals on moss on a cement block. Two weeks ago.

*Why I wait for the snowplow. I'm on a sidehill; the street at either end of my block is steep and slippery, even in rain. In an emergency, I can get out: I do have the snow tires on and a shovel in back. But I'd rather not have to dig myself out, and save my energy, instead, for walking in a snowy wonderland.

¡Ahora sí que nevó! Mientras espero a que pase el quitanieves**, estoy mirando otra vez mi archivo de "Cosas que me hacen feliz".

1. La nieve siempre me trae felicidad, así que empiezo con esta foto, del año pasado. La nieve amonotonada en el estacionamiento de las cataratas Elk. Un montón más alto que mi coche.
2. Cristales de hielo cubriendo musgos en un bloque de cemento. Esto de hace dos semanas.
3. En el acuario, un anfípodo se detiene un segundo para mirarme.
4. Unos líquenes Cladonia spp., probablemente el llamado "Lapiz labial", en un troncón viejo.
5. Detalle de un marco de espejo de hojalata (el marco) que mi hija me trajo de México hace años.
6. En el estuario del rio Campbell, un barco velero duerme en la neblina invernal.

**Porque me quedo esperando el quitanieves: este lugar es puro cerro, subiendo precipitadamente desde la carretera al lado de las playas. Mi calle sale por ambos extremos a caminos empinados, bien resbalosos, aun cuando apenas está lloviendo. Bajo nieve, los coches patinan. Si hay emergencia, puedo salir, ya que tengo llantas para la nieve, y una pala en el maletero. Pero prefiero no tener que excavar el coche y en cambio ahorrar energías para caminar en un paraíso de nieve.

Lipstick Cladonia

Just a tree. At eye level, just a rough, brown pillar. It pays to move in close, closer. Inches away.

Un árbol, nada más. Solo un árbol. Y al nivel de la vista, es solo una columna rugosa color café. Vale la pena acercarnos algo más, hasta unos centímetros de la superficie.

Es el liquen Cladonia macilenta, en la corteza de un abeto de Douglas.

Tall Cladonia

In a few weeks, the understory will be full of new leaves, hiding the ground-dwellers, the under-understory. I've spent a few afternoons in the Oyster Bay woods catching up on this bottom layer before it goes into hiding again.

These are cladonia lichens, on a pair of logs.

These have a purplish brown stalk and apothecia (the fruiting bodies at the tip).

Those little mushrooms are everywhere throughout the shady woods this month, growing on well-rotted wood.

En unas pocas semanas, los sotobosques, el nivel de vegetación entre el suelo y las copas de los árboles, estarán llenos de hojas nuevas, escondiendo los residentes al nivel de mis zapatos, el soto-sotobosque, si se me permite inventar una palabra. Pasé unas tardes mirando esta zona de cerca mientras todavía está a la vista.

Estas fotos son del liquen Cladonia sp. creciendo en troncos caídos, ya bien podridos. En la primera foto, la base es de un color café morado, asimismo los cuerpos fructíferos, los apotecios, en la punta del tallo.

Los honguitos en la primera foto abundan en todo este bosque este mes, creciendo en madera descompuesta. 

En las otras fotos, los apotecios son rojos, dando el nombre común de lapiz labial a estos líquenes. Alrededor de los tallos levantados, las hojitas (escamas) que cubren la madera son la forma inmadura del liiquen.

Green ghost

This is a strange thing. In a tangle of old dead ferns, thimbleberry canes, alder branches, blackberry vines and ancient logs, all in shades of brown and grey, a large mass of pale, sickly green shone out. I pushed through the weeds and climbed over a few slippery logs to get a better look.

It's a stump, almost completely encased in lichen.

Of course, these lichens are everywhere, but what intrigues me is that on none of the surrounding logs or branches is there any sign of it. Just on this stump. The green on the logs on the right is moss; there was no lichen on them.

The lichen is mainly lipstick cladonia; here and there you can see the tiny spots of red on the tips. Scattered throughout are a bunch of those button lichens that grow on old trees.

UPDATE: In the comments, M. Goff identified much of this mass, the green stuff with pinkish buttons, as Icmadophila ericetorum, otherwise known as "fairy barf", "fairy puke", "fairy upchuck", and more politely, as peppermint drop lichen or spraypaint lichen.

Muy extraño: en un lío de helechos muertos, ramas de aliso rojo, cañas de mora y de "thimbleberry" (Rubus parviflorus), y troncos caídos, viejos y podridos, todo esto en tonos de café y gris, una masa pálida, de un verde claro, llamaba la atención. Abrí camino entre la hierba y sobre troncos resbalosos para poder verlo mejor.

Es un tronco cubierto completamente por líquenes. Estos líquenes son bastante comunes, pero lo que me sorprendió es que ninguno de los troncos y restos de plantas alrededor traían el liquen; solamente en este tronco se veía.

El liquen es Cladonia sp., o sea liquen "lapiz labial", y además unos botones de un liquen parecido al que encontré en el manzano.

I looked at a couple of handfuls of moss and lichen from under the trees in the Oyster Bay woods under my microscope.

Traje una bolsita de musgos y liquen del bosquecito de Oyster Bay, y los examiné bajo el microscopio. No pude identificar los musgos, pero el liquen es Cladonia macilenta, o como lo llamamos aquí, cladonia lapiz labial. Entre los fragmentos de líquenes, una hormiga miniatura corría y corría.

Look for the bright red spot near the pointer on the upper left; the tip of a lipstick Cladonia; and near the bottom left, I think that scaly lichen is a Dragon Cladonia.

Skinny redheads

Well, I'm back.

I went for a walk off-road in the snow before I left. I have photos to process, but for now, to kick off 2017, here are some redheaded lichens on a stump.

Lipstick powderhorn, Cladonia macilenta.

Cladonia starts out as a cluster of leaf-like scales. The tall (comparatively) clubs (podetia) are the fertile stage; the red tips are apothecia, producing spores. The grey/green powdery sides of the clubs are also fertile; the tiny balls (soredia) break off and reproduce vegetatively. (Like when you grow a willow from a broken twig in a bottle of water.)

Lichen on a fence

Lipstick cladonia, Cladonia macilenta, in Crescent Beach.

The fence is built of tall, upright boards, rotting away from the top down. The clubs grow out of the grain at the top, like a row of protective spikes.

Fantasmagorical shapes

This was another of those times when a photo opportunity entices us into odd behaviour. The fence was too tall, and I had to stand on tiptoe on a log, clutching the rotting boards for support, holding the camera at forehead height. At any moment, I expected the home owner to come rampaging out; "What are you doing, taking photos of my house and yard?" He didn't notice, though, and I got away safely.
