I was in a parking lot, ready to go. Grabbed a snack for the road; a pepperoni stick from the glove compartment. A lone crow watched me from the edge of the path, and I rolled down the window and offered him a bite. As he snatched it up, another crow showed up. Ok, a second bite for crow #2. And then there was crow #3, and #4 and more. A gull dropped in, squalling already, "Mine, mine, mine!"
Within minutes, the parking lot was full of gulls. And crows, outclassed, too slow, too small; even when I tossed pieces of pepperoni directly at one, the gulls got it first.
How do they do it? When I had arrived at the car, the only bird in sight was that solitary crow. And a gull, one gull, a white speck at the far edge of this large parking space. How did they manage to see my bite-sized bit of flying pepperoni at that distance? How did they instantly invite all the gulls in the neighbourhood to the party?
I finished the pack of pepperoni sticks; one bite for me, two bites for the birds. When I didn't open a second package, the gulls left. A few crows hung around, still hopeful, but finally gave up and wandered off into the weeds.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
