Colours under a grey sky

It has been one of those Island specialty days, when no matter how you dress for the weather, you're out of luck. Rain and wind and lowering clouds so that it's dark at noon, alternating off and on with mild warmth, an attempt at sunshine. A good day to stay home.

I ventured out, jacketless in one of the calm spells, hoping to tidy up wind-fallen flowers. I got as far as my driveway before the wind, getting back to business, drove me inside again. I took a few photos; it was raining again by the time I got to the geraniums.

The hostas in their fall colours. The "herb" box holds handy tools.

I think these will be the last of the sweet pea flowers.

The geraniums seem to like the rain.

Alyssum; these will be going strong even after the first snowfall.

The weather forecast says tomorrow will be more of the same, then steady rain for the rest of the week. I went out and bought new rain gear; my old poncho fell apart last spring.

Happy garden flowers

Yesterday I got out to do garden cleanup: raked the lawn, deadheaded cosmos and dahlias and roses, harvested one (1) squash, weeded, loaded the compost bin. Just in time; today it rained and blew all day; the cosmos and sunflowers have danced wildly from morning till night.

My flowers love this weather. Even with regular watering, they sulked through the warm days. Now, after only 6 rainy days, they're bursting out in new blooms. The cosmos has shot up to well over my head, and the sweet peas are climbing the trellis I set out for them in the spring, which, up to now, they've ignored. A geranium that I thought was dying has dozens of new flower buds. The fall crocuses are blooming.

And we're promised 18 days of rain in October. Wonderful!

I took the camera out in the rain until it got too wet.

Alyssum, purple and white.

Sweet pea. All its flowers this year have been purple.

Geranium buds. Insane red petals.

Raindrops on geranium.

And more alyssum. White only.

I was going to leave this for later, but in keeping with the watery theme, here's a guttating (what a word! From Latin "gutta", drop. Gota in Spanish; it sounds fine there.) polypore fungus.

These droplets are not raindrops nor dew; they exude from the mushroom's flesh. Guttation is produced during periods of rapid growth. Some polypores weep in different colours; our red-belted polypore oozes these clear drops.

Sweet climber.

The first of the sweet peas. Such colours!

Climbing a rusty wire fence.

This is in a friend's garden; my sweet peas got started a little late and have no flowers as yet.

Tenacity

The snowplow came and I went out for a long drive, and a short walk, some of it through snow up to my knees. Trees and lakes (3) and a river, all white and smooth and gleaming, even the packed snow of the road once I was off the highway. And then I came home and found this at my front door.

My sweet peas, still doggedly producing flowers, snow or no snow.

My iron birds in their iron birdbath.

I hadn't noticed, until I downloaded the photo, the two sprouts of alyssum, one already flowering. Doing fall cleanup a couple of weeks ago, I cut the whole patch down, They're not giving up, not them!

And this was along the road, near Mirror Lake: towhees are ground foragers, but their ground was under a foot of white stuff, so they were picking at the bedraggled leaves still hanging on the bushes.

And then another car went by and they all flew away.

The temperature went down to -8° Celsius yesterday, A bit low for this location, but not the lowest it has been historically. Now it's back up to 2° above zero, and rain is on the schedule. So the snow will melt, down by the shore at least. Not up where the towhees were; that's a bit over 200 metres above sea level, enough to make a difference.

Fotos:

Summer delights

I've been taking too many photos and posting too few. Playing catch-up now. These are flowers from my garden, a friend's garden, and across the fence in an neighbour's yard.

A hibiscus with a bee hiding inside.

Pink hollyhock. With a masking tape bandage, where the wind bent the stalk.

Scarlet runner beans. Always a delight.

A yellow dahlia, with a few bugs.

The back side of a dahlia.

And a cheerful stand of dahlias.

White sweet pea, with a hint of pink.

So red! I like the way the runner has grabbed onto a spider web for support.
