So many flowers!

Here are some of the flowers I saw along the Rock Bay road:

One of the paintbrushes, probably Common red paintbrush, Castillelja sp.

Twinflowers, Linnaea borealis. Very tiny; two flowers on each Y stem.

Hardhack, Spiraea douglasii ssp douglasii.

Oceanspray, Holodiscus discolor. Lake McCreight.

Penstemon, probably Penstemon serrulatus.

Algunas de las flores que vi por el camino hacia Rock Bay:

1. Castilleja sp., probablemente C. miniata. En inglés las llamamos "pinceles" (o brochas de pintor: en inglés es la misma palabra.
2. Flor gemela, Linnaea borealis. Una flor muy pequeña; cada tallo, en forma de "Y" lleva dos flores.
3. Spiraea douglasii ssp. douglasii. Muy común cerca de agua; hace masas de arbustos casi impenetrables.
4. Rocío oceánico, Holodiscus discolor.
5. Penstemon serrulatus.

This is in a friend's garden; my sweet peas got started a little late and have no flowers as yet.

Ephemeral

The hostas are flowering.

Buds and flowers on a stalk.

They don't last: already the lower ones are hanging like old rags on a line. But for a few days, they're glorious!

Las hostas están en flor. Las flores no duran; ya las de abajo están colgadas como trapos viejos al extremo de sus tallos. Pero por unos cuantos días, son bellas.

On the sunny side of the carport.

Nasturtiums, hydrangea, lavender, and fading bleeding heart leaves.

And the sun shone bright.

Flores y sol al lado de la cochera esta tarde en todos los colores del arco iris. Capuchinas, hortensias, lavandula, y hojas secas de dicentra (flor sangrante).

Tiger spots

This week the tiger lilies are blooming along the edges of the forest.

Dancing in the wind.

The bulbs are edible; First Nations people used to harvest them for their peppery flavour. But these days, with so many challenges, who would want to stop them blooming next year?

Al borde del bosque, donde alcanza el sol, los lirios (lirios de tigre, los llamamos aquí) están en flor esta semana. Son nativos de esta región, y los indígenas comían los bulbos, que tienen un sabor picante. Pero ahora que todo está amenazado por la supuesta civilización, hay que protegerlos para que salgan el año que entra.
