Dry hill, wet rocks

It had been three years since I last hiked up to Lupin Falls. And there I was, driving past; might as well see what it's like at the end of September, after a dry summer.

On previous vists, in rainier times of the year, I've found the parasitic candystick, saprophytic pinesaps, coralroot orchids, the possibly saprophytic wintergreen, and many mushrooms. Not this time; although I kept stopping to examine the hillside, I found nothing but moss and vanilla leaf, this still green here in the deep shade.

This long side of the loop trail goes up near the top of the falls, then drops to the viewing platform at the bottom. On the way, a bridge crosses Lupin Creek, at this time of year, all dry stones; a bit further on, there were a couple of puddles. And, not surprisingly, the falls now are reduced to a narrow stream between wet rocks.

There are two steps, totalling a 40 metre drop.

 Ya van tres años desde que visité las cataratas Lupin. Fui a ver como le ha dejado este verano seco. En otras visitas, en temporadas más lluviosas, he encontrado ahí la "tallo dulce", Allotropa virgata, una planta parásita; e Hypopitys monotropa, una planta saprófita; y las orquídeas Corallorhiza sp.; ina de las Pyrola sp. que posiblemente también puede ser saprófita; y muchos hongos. Pero no encontré ni una esta vez, aunque me detenía a cada rato para examinar el terreno. Solamente vi musgos y "hoja de vainilla", Achlys triphylla. que sigue verde aquí en la sombra.

El tramo largo de este sendero circular (así lo llaman, aunque no forma un círculo) sube hasta arriba de  las cataratas, y luego baja hasta la plataforma observatoria a su pie. En camino, un puente cruza el  riachuelo Lupin, que en esta época del año contiene solamente piedras secas; un poco más adelante, vi dos charcos. Y no resulta sorprendente, pues, que las cataratas consisten en una hilera de agua rodeada de piedras mojadas.

4. Más de cerca. Esta región se basa en gran manera en piedra volcánica, especialmente lava acojinada. No sé si lo azul se debe a la luz, en este sitio sombreado, o si es una característica de estas rocas.
