I came home at dusk, logged on, and realized that it was International Rock Flipping Day, and I'd almost missed it. I rushed out, turned over 2 rocks and a 4x4 board, and found these:

Sowbugs, Porcellionidae, on the bottom of the 4x4. |

Cricket. Female; she has that long ovipositor; she'll lay her eggs in this damp dirt. |

And a tiny snail; there were quite a few of these. |
While I'm at it, may as well add these, from inside the house.

A pretty midge, on my wall. |

And a lucky weevil, on my bedside table. All wrapped up in spider silk, but he escaped. |
More lucky critters; the male crickets chirp (loudly, without stopping, all night) to attract females. One got into my bedroom a couple of days ago and has spent the nights calling, calling. I couldn't find him; they're elusive, and the sound reverberates everywhere. And tonight, he was silent, but I found him (accidentally) under my laundry basket. With a female; no wonder he was quiet.
And they're a lucky couple because a big hunting spider was a leap away when I popped glasses over the two of them and took them outside to play in the dark. Where there will be damp soil for her eggs; there's none in here.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
