The tiger lilies bloom along the sides of the highway, and in open fields the first weeks of July. These are growing in a friend's garden; they may be imports.

The indigenous species, Lilium columbianum, according to E-Flora BC and my guide book, grows to about 1.2 m. tall. The Asian species, Lilium lancifolium, which has escaped gardens here, grows to 2 metres. Apart from this, and that the native species can be a paler orange or yellow, they look alike. These, in my friend's garden, looked down on me; almost as tall as the sunflowers across the fence.

The sunflowers are also immigrants here: they originated down south on this continent, and were first domesticated in Mexico (c. 2600 BCE: they've had plenty of time to move north.) The sunflowers in our gardens may be the same species as smaller ones growing wild, but are bred for that great, glorious face, and its load of black seeds, a treat for winter-resident birds.

En las primeras semanas de julio, los lirios de tigre florecen a los lados de las carreteras y en campos abiertos. Estos, que crecen en el jardín de una amiga, pueden ser de una especie importada.

Los lirios de tigre indígenos, Lilium columbianum, según E-FloraBC y mi libro guía, llegan hasta 1.2 metros de altura. La especie asiática, Lilium lancifolium, la cual ha escapado de los jardines aquí, crece hasta 2 metros o más. Eso, y que el lirio nativo puede tener flores más pálidos, hasta amarillos, es la única diferencia visible entre las dos especies. Estos, en el jardín de mi amiga, me miraban desde arriba; eran casi tan altos como los girasoles en el jardín vecino.

Los girasoles también son imigrantes aquí; nativos de este continente, pero más al sur, fueron domesticados originalmente en México, cerca de 2600 antes de Cristo. Ya han tenido suficiente tiempo para trasladarse al norte. Los que crecen en nuestros jardines pueden ser la misma especie que la de los girasoles "salvajes", pero están cultivados para producir esa cara grande, asoleada, y por su carga de semillas negras, el deleite de pájaros invernantes.
