Nice to come home to.

My house is on a steep slope. The carport is cut out of the side of the hill, so on one side, a retaining wall holds a flower bed at chest height. I took the photo of bleeding hearts from my driver's side car window.

Bleeding hearts, Lamprocapnos spectabilis

Purple hyacinth, Hyacinthus sp. Perfuming the carport.

  2. Jacinto en el mismo cantero. Derrama su perfume por todo el cantero.
Y siempre llego a casa feliz.

It's tomorrow, today.

10 days. I've been mostly shut in, sleeping or wishing I were sleeping, promising myself to post "tomorrow", for 10 days. I'm awake now, I think.

Outside, the winter's bare branches are clothed in a pale green froth, pink and white blossoms blow in the wind, the sky and sea are blue, blue, blue. At my door, the spring flowers are almost done, and summer's offerings are leafing out. It's time I got my old bones moving. Weeding and planting to do, salmonberry flowers and pink trilliums to visit along the forest trails.

These photos are from 10 days ago.

Bleeding hearts in deep shade.

Heather in full sun.
Pink hyacinths.

Peonies rising from the remains of last year's stalks.

Going out now to see what the day offers. I'll be back tomorrow. Promise!

10 dias.

While I wait

The weather is ... well, typical Vancouver Island spring weather; sunshine, snow, rain, freezing wind, fog, sun warm on your back; all in quick succession, changing from moment to moment.

But the spring flowers just keep on trucking. Daffodils bloom under my kitchen window, crocuses and hyacinths and Johnny-jump-ups beside the carport, forsythia over the lawn and up and down the street. And I saw a bee foraging among the plum blossoms.

Crocuses and hyacinths. And the first leaves of the next wave: bluebells.

Forsythia against a briefly blue sky.

Zeroing in on a pair of crocuses. Love that purple!

At the edge of the woods, red-flowering currant is coming right along.

The first salmonberry flowers should be opening in a week or so. Waiting is hard.

Me cuesta trabajo esperar.

Scented purples

My carport is cut into the side of a hill. So when I come home and step out of the car, the hyacinths greet me at nose level.

A perfumed welcome

Too heavy for their stalk.

Zooming in. So purple!

¡Tan acogedor!

Snowdrops and hyacinths

The snowdrops are up.

Today, from the highway I saw rocky mountain faces wearing frozen waterfalls. Snow still lies on the ground underneath the trees. But the sun was shining and my snowdrops are blooming.

And the news is heartbreaking, and I saw a truck flying threatening flags, and Covid is still here. But the sun shines, and my snowdrops are blooming.

Snowdrops under my kitchen window.

And a promise of hyacinths.

Strength for the day. It's sufficient.

February blooms

I got home in time for supper, but still well after sundown. And there beside the carport, were the snowdrops, already blooming. It was after dark, so I would have to use flash, but I just had to record the moment.

Snowdrops. No snow. The tangle of other leaves is the remains of the Alyssum that was still blooming until the snow covered it.

My poor turtle, who started life as a flowerpot, and now has no bottom, provides shelter for the first hyacinth sprouts.

Spring hyacinths

My hyacinths are blooming!

Wish I could post the perfume, too.

The house is on a hillside, so that the driveway is a few feet below the lawn and flower beds, held in place by a retaining wall. When I drive in and open the car door, the hyacinths are a few feet away, and hyacinth perfume surrounds me. A beautiful welcome!

Hyacinth

My carport is half sunken. Beside it, about shoulder height, the wall opens to a garden area crammed, at this time of year, with hyacinths. I drive in, open the car door, and immediately the perfume envelops me. And this is my eye-level view.

Breathe deep!
