So big, so tiny

 I have to carry two cameras when I water my garden. One for the sunflowers overhead:

Huge head, busy building seeds for the birds. And it's too heavy for its own stem. I had to add a couple of support poles.

And the pocket camera for the littles on the wall below:

Jumping spider, Phidippus johnsoni, female. The males' abdomen is completely red.

Another of the sunflowers, half size still.

With a bud.

And on the wall again:

A Noctuid (owlet) moth, Oligia divesta.

Tengo que traer dos cámaras cuando salgo a regar mi jardín. Una para los girasoles allá arriba:

1. Un girasol casi maduro, produciendo las semillas para los pájaros. Tan pesada es la flor que el tallo se dobla. Tuve que añadir dos postes como sostén.

Y la otra cámara, la de bolsillo, para las criaturas abajo en la pared:

2. Una araña saltarina, Phidippus johnsoni. Una hembra: el abdomen del macho es rojo sin la franja negra en el centro.

    3. Otro de los girasoles. Este está todavía a la mitad de su tamaño final.

    4. Y otro, con un botón.

    5. En la pared otra vez: una mariposa nocturna de la familia de los noctuidos, Oligia divesta.

She uses sign language

What is it with my compost bin and spiders? (See previous post.) I have a heavy rock on the lid, put there to discourage scavenging raccoons. I moved it (just the rock) this afternoon, and rousted out the largest red-backed jumping spider I've ever seen. And she didn't attempt to run away, but instead ran up to the top to get a good look at me.

The camera's flash is reflected in her eyes. And look at those shiny green fangs!

Phidippus johnsoni, female. The females have the black stripe down the centre of the red-topped abdomen. Besides, she has thin pedipalps; males wear boxing gloves.

Viewed from the top, her rear eyes stand atop raised peaks. There are 4 front eyes, these 2 rear ones, and 2 tiny ones on the side, barely visible here. So she can watch me from any angle.

She waves those hairy, black and white pedipalps constantly.

Beyond attracting a partner, (males) the waving of the legs and pedipalps is a primary method for communicating with other spiders, especially in territorial disputes. (Biology Insights)

So, did she think I might understand spider sign language? Or ...

 While a waving motion can sometimes be a defensive posture, it’s not necessarily indicative of fear. They are more likely assessing you as a potential threat, trying to determine whether you are prey, predator, or neither. (Institute for Environmental Research and Education)

Neither predator nor prey. I left her in possession of her rock.

Parece que a las arañas les gusta mi recipiente para compost. (Otra araña, en mayo.) Mantengo una piedra pesada encima de la tapa, con la intención de desaminar a los mapaches que antes quitaban la tapa para meterse adentro del recipiente. Esta tarde arrimé la piedra, y desperté la araña saltarína más grande que haya visto antes. Y no se asustó, no se echó a correr, sino que se subió encima de la piedra para verme mejor.

    1. Se ven en sus ojos los reflejos del flash de la cámara. ¡Y mira esos quelíceros verdes tan brillantes!

    2. Phidippus johnsoni, la araña de dorso rojo. Es hembra, por el centro negro del abdomen, y los pedipalpos delgados. (Los machos, parece que traen guantes de boxeo.)

    3. Vistos desde arriba, los ojos traseros están elevados. Hay 4 ojos en frente, esos 2 atrás, y 2 ojitos viendo hacia ambos lados. Así que me puede estar viendo desde cualquier punto de vista.

    4. Constantemente está agitando los pedipalpos.

Aparte del objeto de atraer una pareja (los machos) la agitación de las patas y los pedipalpos es una manera principal de comunicarse con otras arañas, sobre todo en disputas sobre territorios. (Biology Insights)

Entonces, ¿creía que tal vez yo comprendería la lenguaje de señales de las arañas? O ...

 Mientras que el movimiento puede ser una postura defensiva, no necesariamente indica temor. Es más probable que te están evaluando, si presentas una amenaza, tratando de decidir si eres presa, depredador, o ni uno ni el otro. (Institute for Environmental Research and Education)

Bueno, yo no era presa. Ni depredadora tampoco. La dejé con la posesión libre de su piedra.

Black and red

We're two thirds through the month of Arachtober. (The month when a bunch of spider lovers post our arachnid — spiders and their kin — photos to the Flickr Arachtober group pool. ) Which I've barely mentioned here this year, I'm not sure why. And though I've posted several of the Arachtober spiders here, I've somehow missed this one. I posted her photo to the Arachtober pool the second of October, and then again, two more photos today, for Arachtober Day 20.

Here she is, on the outside of my window, giving me a good view of her underside. Posted October 2.

And here, a few minutes later, she's hunting among the cosmos stems.

She's a jumping spider, Phidippus sp., probably P. johnsonii. The females have red sides to their abdomen, with a black stripe down the centre. Males' abdomens are solid red. I've seen several of her cousins on the wall behind my flowers.

11 more days of Arachtober. Towards the end of the month, it gets sort of wild, with us all posting up to 5 spiders daily, and getting a bit crazy as we head into Hallowe'en. Check us out!

Ya estamos a dos tercios del mes de Arachtober. (El mes cuando un grupo de amantes de las arañas subimos nuestras fotos de arácnidos — arañas y miembros de su familia — al archivo Flickr Arachtober. Y apenas lo he mencionado aquí este año,  no entiendo porque. Y aunque he subido fotos de algunas de las arañas recientes, se me había pasado esta. Subí su foto a Flickr el segundo de octurbre, y otras dos hoy, para el Dia 20 de Aractober.

1. En mi ventana, mostrándome una vista ventral. Subí esta foto el 2 de octubre.
2. Unos minutos más tarde, anda cazando entre los tallos del cosmos.
3. Aquí muestra los diseños rojos en el abdomen. Subí esta foto hoy.

Es una araña saltarín, Phidippus sp., probablemente P. johnsonii. Las hembras tienen diseños rojos a los lados de su abdomen, y una linea negra en el centro. El abdomen del macho es puro rojo. He visto varias de sus primos en la pared atrás de mis flores.

Nos quedan 11 dias todavía de Arachtober. Cerca del fin del mes, se vuelve algo animado, ya que entonces todos estaremos subiendo hasta 5 fotos diarios, y volviéndonos un poco locos al acercarnos al dia de los muertos. ¡Visítanos aquí!

Red and black and shiny eyes.

A pair of red and black jumping spiders were patrolling the wall outside my window in the late afternoon. Like all jumpers, they were very active, and it was difficult to get near without trampling my flower bed.

Phidippus sp., probably P. johnsoni, possibly female. A large spider, almost 1 cm. long

This one, slightly smaller, may be a male.

If these are Phidippus johnsoni, the female will have a black stripe down her back, while the male's back is almost entirely red.

The fangs have a greenish sheen; I tried to get a decent look at them, but neither of the two wanted to cooperate. I know where to look for them now, so I'll try again another day.
