Homebody

I am a somewhat lazy gardener. For example; composting; I dump garden and kitchen stuff in the big bin but rarely get around to stirring it. So when I harvested last year's compost a couple of weeks ago to start off this summer's veggies (scarlet runner beans, parsley, cilantro, zucchini, and sunflowers) I found it caked in the bottom of the bin, too solid to be removed through the bottom door. I poked and banged at it with a shovel and a hoe, but finally had to turn the whole bin upside-down and pound it, then roll it around, scraping at the walls, raking the compost out onto a tarp.

Only when that was done, did I notice this spider sitting calmly in her web on the underside of the bin between the molded feet. She moved forward a bit as I bent over her, then held her ground, stretched out as if to claim her property, come what may.

I turned the bin right-side up, repositioned it carefully on its stony base, and closed the bottom door.  And then thought I should have gotten a photo, so I went for the camera, came back and turned the bin upside-down again. And there sat the spider, still unafraid,  still steadfastly guarding her home.

Me gusta trabajar en el jardín, pero tengo que confesar una cierta flojera. Por ejemplo, haciendo el compost: lleno la compostera de desperdicios de la cocina y del jardín, pero raras veces agito el abono que se está formando.  Así que cuando hace quince dias quise abonar mis verduras (ejotes, calabacitas, perejil, cilantro, girasoles) con el compost hecho durante el año pasado, lo encontré duro y comprimido en el fondo del recipiente, tan sólido que ni con la pala ni con el azadón lo podría sacar de la compostera. Por fin volteé la compostera boca abajo y luego la rodé por el suelo, golpeándola y raspando el interior hasta poder vaciar el abono.

No fue hasta que había terminado, que vi esta araña esperando tranquilamente en su telaraña entre las patas de la compostera.  Cuando me acerqué se adelantó un poquito, extendiéndose como para afirmar su posesión del sitio; luego se quedó inmóvil.

Con cuidado, entonces, volteé la compostera (patas abajo ahora) y la coloqué sobre su base de piedras. Y luego se me ocurrió que debería haber sacado una foto, y fui por la cámara, regresé y volví a voltear la compostera boca abajo. Y esa araña, sin alterarse, seguía en la misma postura, seguía protegiendo su hogar.
