A spot of cheer

I'm ending up the year posting photos of mushrooms. Maybe that's appropriate; many of them grow, preferably, in the secret dark.

But down there in the dark, there are still flashes of light and colour.

Orange mushrooms, Miracle Beach woods.

Orange jelly, possibly. Oyster Bay woods.

Witches' Butter? Oyster Bay woods. I like the way the sun shining through it warms the shadows.

Witches' Butter and Orange Jelly are difficult to distinguish without much close inspection. I could easily — easily — have mis-identified them.

Hemmed in

The good thing about bad times, I used to tell my kids (and myself) is that once they're over, we're stronger, more confident. We know we can handle whatever comes; look what we just did!

So this year. This Christmas season. This winter. It's rough, I know. But we'll pull through.

And in the doing, we'll have discovered new stratagems, made new memories.

And some of those memories will be good ones, warm, comforting memories, memories that make us laugh, that bring gentle tears. "Remember the Christmas decorations we made for the tree at the nurses' station in the hospital?" "Remember that year we ate Christmas dinner in MacDonald's because we were broke? And came home to find a box of goodies on the porch?" "Remember when the stove went on the blink and Dad fried the turkey piece by piece in an electric skillet on the porch?" "Remember when it snowed so hard I ended up eating a fried sausage at home alone with the cat?"

We will make new, very personal, adjustments to our traditions, to be passed on year to year.

What new thing will you do this year?

Hemmed in.

2020!

So here we are. 2020. It's just gone midnight here; we're late to the party in slowpoke BC. I know the rest of the world has given up and gone to bed already. But we get there, eventually.

So it's 2020. And just last week, wasn't it, I was staying up all night working on my daughter's computer on New Year's Day, 2000? Seems like yesterday; seems like a century ago. Time's a funny thing.

Anyhow, here's to 2020! Wishing you a good year; wishing you courage, wisdom, and fortitude: we're going to need it.

From my windowsill while it blew and stormed outside.
