Busy Cladonia

In the forest and the interface between the forest and the dunes at Oyster Bay, Cladonia lichens are everywhere, completely covering the remains of old stumps, growing out of the cracks of logs, on the moss, even on the sand, where, I'm sure, it's a thin coat of sand over old wood.

I don't know if these are all the same species in different stages, or different species.

Mushrooms, when they grow on wood, hide most of their growth inside, where they work on decomposing the wood. Lichens, on the other hand, grow on the surface, and don't harm the wood; they get their energy from the sun, as plants do, and take other nutrients and water from the air.

En el bosquecito de Oyster Bay y en el area de las dunas que bordean el bosque, los líquenes Cladonia crecen abundantemente, cubriendo troncones viejos por completo, brotando de entre las grietas de madera podrida, entre los musgos, y hasta en la arena, donde esta apenas cubre suelo que viene siendo en su mayor parte restos de madera aun más descompuesta.

No sé si estas fotos son todas de la misma especie de Cladonia en distintas etapas de su vida, o de distintas especies.

Fotos: 

1. Creciendo en las grietas de un tronco quemado.
2. Este cubre todo un troncón corto.
3. En el bosque, estos crecen en madera ya bien descompuesta.
4. En el suelo del bosque, entre musgos y las primeras plantas de la primavera.

Los hongos, cuando crecen en madera, esconden la mayor parte de su organismo dentro de la madera, donde se ocupan en descomponer la madera. Los líquenes, en cambio, crecen en la superficie, y no dañan la madera; obtienen su energía del sol, como lo hacen las plantas verdes, y derivan otros nutrientes y el agua que necesitan del aire.
