Speckled spider and dewy web

Last year, at the end of January, I came across a rotted log growing a good crop of a carnival candy slime mold. Since then, every time I go to Oyster Bay, I check out that log, in hopes of seeing the slime again, but so far, with no luck.

I checked again last week. No slime mold, but there was a tiny brownish spider with her dewy web.

Web on the left, spider on the right, trying to hide. Not a hint of red slime mold.

As close as I could get to her. One cm. more, and she ran down and into a deep crack.

And I'll keep going back to look. There are four things I'm checking every visit now; the old log with its strange white growths, the knobby tree, and the big, whitish, messy mushrooms. And this slime mold/spider log.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
