Dripping conks

Three Red-belted polypores, Fomitopsis mounceae. This very common polypore is extremely variable:

"White to light yellow when young, maturing to brown with a reddish concentric zone near margin; knob-like when young, shelf-like to hoof-shaped at maturity; ... grows on more than 100 host tree species." (Common Mushrooms of the Northwest)

Mature mushroom, with just a hint of the red "belt".

A younger specimen. One in the book matches this exactly.

Two "babies". Almost completely white, knob-like.

In the brief interval between rains, everything was wet, but these polypores were even more so; the guttation droplets that cover them are secreted from inside the mushroom itself.

(Common Mushrooms of the Northwest)

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
