Slug delight

 It's not just the mushrooms; when you stop to look at them, there's all kinds of other stuff going on.

These first three photos were taken with the cell phone, in the rain.

One of the large white mushrooms with brownish caps. But look beyond: see the slug? And the big bites he's already taken out of the cap?

Cramped quarters? A log overhead? No problem. The mushroom makes its own space. The rim has already been slug-bitten.

Three tipped brown mushrooms, gilled, with ridged stalks, and a springtail. What tipped them over, breaking one completely off? A raccoon? The slugs haven't gotten to these yet. But they will.

And this little gem, from the week before, when the sun shone.

Almost like a miniature sun itself. Or a caramel candy. About 2 cm. wide.

Tomorrow: mushrooms on logs. And then a zillion or so on a stump.

Hay hongos. Pero siempre hay más, cuando te detienes a mirarlos. Estas primeras tres fotos, las saqué con el teléfono, bajo una lluvia suave.

1. Uno de los hongos grandes, blancos, con la superficie del sombrero color café. Pero ¿ves la babosa? ¿Y las grandes mordidas que le ha dado?
2. ¿Y qué importa que no haya espacio? El hongo no se detiene, hace su propio hueco. Aquí un tronco encima no le impide alzarse. Y una babosa ya se ha desayunado con el borde del sombrero.
3. Tres hongos cafés, con laminillas y el tallo con sus estrías. Y mira; hay un colémbolo. ¿Y qué animal los habrá tumbado, separando el de encima completamente de su base? ¿Un mapache, será? Las babosas todavía no hallan este grupo. Pero lo harán.
4. Y una foto de la semana pasada, cuando había sol. Un honguito que hasta parece un solecito también. O un dulce de caramelo. Mide alrededor de 2 cm. de diámetro.  

Para mañana, hongos creciendo en troncos caídos. Y luego, cientos de hongos en un solo tocón.
