Escape

Bird's nests. And the eggs have flown.

There were no birds. These are fungi; it's the eggs that do the flying.

Peridia, peridioles, on a soaked log. Lupin Falls trail.

These tiny birds' nest fungi grow on decaying wood, in two stages: first, as fine threads (called hyphae) spreading through the wood. When conditions are right, the reproductive stage, the bird's nests, form on the surface.

Each nest (peridia) contains spore cases (peridioles) that look like tiny flattened eggs. When it rains, drops falling into the cups splash the peridioles out; some may fly as far as 2 metres from the nest. There, they dry out and split apart, releasing the spores.

It was raining off and on when I found these nests. Most of the nests were still full, but there are a number of peridioles scattered around outside. More rain will wash them down to catch in cracks in the log.

Nidos de pájaros. Y los huevos volaron.

Pues no había pajaritos.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
