The forests in this area are of three general types: mostly evergreens, hemlock, cedars, and Douglas firs, with a smattering of red alders around the edges; mixed deciduous and evergreens, with the deciduous trees mostly red alders and big-leaf maples; and lower wooded areas, near rivers, where shrubs such as elderberry, salmonberry, wild roses, flowering currant, and Pacific ninebark cover a large proportion of the ground. Baikie Island is one of those last. Around the edges of the island at this time of year, it's all bare stems, some bearing the first tiny leaf buds.
A robin perched in the middle of one of these "clear" spaces and sat watching me for a while.

Los bosques de esta isla se pueden categorizar como pertenecientes a uno de tres variedades: primero, bosques de árboles de hoja perenne, los abetos (Tsuga sp.), los abetos de Douglas (Pseudotsuga menziesii) y los cedros, con algunos alisos rojos en las orillas donde les llega el sol; bosque mixto de coníferas y árboles de hoja caduca, mayormente los alisos rojos y los arces de hoja-grande; y en las partes bajas, cerca de los rios, una multitud de arbustos nativos, los saúcos rojos, salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis), rosas silvestres, grosellero rojo, y ninebark (Physocarpus capitatus) cubren gran parte del terreno. La isla Baikie es uno de estos últimos. En esta temporada del año la luz penetra entre un encaje de tallos desnudos, algunos con los primeros brotes pequeños de las hojas de primavera.
Un petirrojo se detuvo en el centro de uno de estos epacios "abiertos" y se quedó mirándome por un rato.
- Los tallos de arbustos hacen un cortina ligera, permitiendo ver el agua de la laguna y la orilla del otro lado. El mes que entra, se llenarán de hojas, formando una pared impenetrable.
