Catching a few rays

Cutting paths through the forest lets in a few scattered rays of sunlight. Where the surroundings are all blanketed with moss and evergreen ferns, the edges of the trails are sprinkled with mostly tiny flowers. These were some I saw this week.

False Solomon's seal, Maianthemum racemosum

Serviceberry, aka Saskatoon, Amelanchier alnifolia

Vanilla leaf, Alchys triphylla

Yellow violet, Viola sp.

Oregon grape, Mahonia sp.

And out in the open:

English daisies, not really a daisy (Erigeron spp.). An introduced species, Bellis perennis.

Most of these are spring blooming flowers, although our weather now is suddenly more like mid-summer, hot and dry only a few weeks after near-freezing temperatures and daily rain; in sunnier spots along the trails, the vanilla leaves were wilting. This may be another challenging summer for our temperate rain-forest species.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
