Following the rules

Rules for the trail: Slow down! Stop and gaze! Take a knee! And don't forget to look at the backsides and undersides of old logs ...

If this is a conifer log, it's Orange jelly. If the log is deciduous, it's Witches' Butter.

Probably red-belted polypore. And what are those pimples on the bark crust?

A large patch of bark crust, from as close as I could get.

These patches, as far as I could tell, are from the genus Peniophora. E-Flora BC lists 12 species found in BC, on both dead conifer and deciduous wood, but there are few photos, and none were definitive.

Of the corticoid fungi, which includes the Peniophoraceae, Wikipedia says, "Although the fruiting bodies are formed on the underside of dead branches or logs, the fungus resides within the wood."

  1. Yes, but always be aware of bite-y critters!

    1. Not so much around here. Nothing much seems to have it in for us, except the mosquitos and noseeums. And the occasional tick.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
