Orange ribbon

Back to the shore ...

I met this long worm near the low tide line.

Orange ribbon worm, Tubulanus polymorphus.

That's his mid-section; both head and tail are buried in the sand. The visible part was about two feet long, and he was hurrying to get out of sight.

These worms at rest are usually under two feet (60 cm.) long, but they stretch. And stretch. And stretch. Fully extended, they can reach up to 3 metres (10 feet)! And that's it; there's not much else to see, just a long, slithering, bright orange tube. The head is slightly rounded, but has no eyes, and the mouth is on the underside.

But they stretch even more: 

Tubulanus polymorphus is a carnivore. On encountering a worm, crustacean or other prey item, the proboscis (tubular mouthparts used for feeding and sucking) is everted (turned inside out) through the proboscis pore. The proboscis winds around the prey and mucus and toxic secretions immobilise it. It is then passed to the mouth and swallowed whole, or if too large, digestive juices are secreted onto it and the semi-digested tissues are sucked into the mouth. (Wikipedia)

Regresando a la playa.

Me encontré con este gusano cerca del nivel bajo de la zona intramareal.

Foto: un gusano listón anaranjado, Tubulanus polymorphus.  Lo que se ve es el centro del gusano; tanto la cabeza como la cola están escondidas en la arena. La parte visible medía más o menos 60 cm., y el gusano se apresuraba para desaparecer.

Estos gusanos, en reposo, miden generalmente menos de 60 cm, pero se pueden estirar. Se estiran y se estiran aun más. ¡A su extensión máxima, pueden llegar a 3 metros de largo! Y eso es todo; no hay gran cosa más para ver. Parecen nada más que un tubo anaranjado brillante largo que se desliza por la arena. La cabeza es ligeramente redondeada, pero no tiene ojos, y la boca está fuera de la vista, en la parte inferior.

Pero aparte de estirar el cuerpo, se pueden extender aun más:

Tubulanus polymorphus es carnívoro. Cuando encuentra un gusano, un crustáceo, u otro animal de presa, la probóscide (o trompa evaginable) se extiende, volteado de adentro para afuera por medio del poro de la probóscide. La probóscide se enrolla alrededor de la presa, y secreciones de moco y agentes tóxicos la paralizan. Luego se la pasa hacia la boca y se traga por entero, o, si es demasiado grande, se secretan jugos digestivos que la cubren, y los tejidos medio digeridos se aspiran a la boca. (Wikipedia).
