Squirrel 1: Home Team 1

He won that round.

I slept in this morning. When I got up, the suet was gone, the flimsy wire I had used twisted and spread apart.

I'm off to Home Depot to look for a cage.

* Update: I bought a metal suet basket, plus some sturdy wire to attach it to the branch. It's hanging up now. I want to watch the suet thief wear down his teeth on that!

  1. We haven't had squirrel problems, but each fall woodrats start storing up for the winter. They raid my garden, not a good thing. We purchased a Havahart live trap that works really well. They come in several sizes and models, one specific for squirrels. - Margy

  2. Margy,

One of our neighbours has one of those. He trapped Scruffy last year and relocated her to a nearby park. I saw her there in the summer, but by fall, she had found her way home.

But the cage I meant was one for the suet. I got one, with a latch and a chain, and added wire to attach it to the tree. Now, we'll see if the new squirrel can steal it!

  3. I'm pretty sure thin wires pose no problem for the squirrel to chew through. Hopefully, the metal suet basket will do a better job.

I am excited to see what kind of birds the suet will attract. And of course, the outcome of this wit-match. Good luck!

  4. PSYL,

So far, so good. And the juncos are all over it, dropping crumbs for the sparrows again. I hope the varied thrush comes back.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
