Back to the beaver pond

July is a good month in "my" beaver pond (a no-name spot on the map, near Echo Lake). Well, all the months are good there, but July is especially full of busy life.

This year, the aquatic plants are unusually enthusiastic; there's hardly any open water at all. It's covered with water lily pads (no flowers yet) and floating pondweeds. Near the edges, and covering almost the whole shady area of the pond, the swamp horsetails grow so close together that they look like a solid floor, about 60 cm. above the water surface. And even from the path across the pond, it's difficult to reach the edge of the water because the hardhack has closed in so tightly.

Where I could reach the water, under the roots of the horsetail there are tangles of the carnivorous bladderwort underwater stems. Around them, their oblivious prey swims; aquatic insects, large and small. I saw a fat tadpole; there will be frogs later on.

Along the path to the pond, the fireweed is in full bloom, with bees dashing from one bright pink stalk to the next. And the thimbleberries are almost ripe.

I've been eating thimbleberries since I was a toddler, and never until now realized that each separate drupelet is either paired or split down the middle.

En julio, la laguna de los castores ("mi" laguna, aunque es nada más un sitio sin nombre en el mapa) se llena de vida. Bueno, siempre hay vida interesante allí, pero en el mes de julio se hace aparente en toda su diversidad.

Este año, las plantas acuáticas son muy entusiastas, y casi no han dejado agua abierta. Las hojas redondas de lirios acuáticos (sin flores todavía) y las hojas ovaladas de Potamogaton natans cubren casi toda la laguna.  Cerca de las orillas, y en toda la parte que siempre queda en sombra, la cola de caballo acuática, Equisetum fluviatile, crecen tan densamente que parecen ser un piso sólido unos 60 cm. arriba de la superficie del agua. Y hasta desde el camino que cruza la laguna, es difícil llegar a la orilla del agua por las Spiraea douglasii, que forma una barrera firme.

Donde pude llegar al agua, se ven bajo las raices de la cola de caballo, redes de los tallos subacuáticos de la planta carnívora Urticularia vulgaris. Alrededor, su presa nada, sin la conciencia de su peligro; insectos y larvas acuáticos grandes y miniaturos. Vi un renacuajo gordo; habrá ranas más tarde.

Por el sendero que da a la laguna, el epilobio (hierba de fuego), Chamaenerion angustifolium, está en plena flor, y las abejas las rodean, volando apresuradas desde una planta a la próxima. Y los thimbleberry, Rubus parviflorus, ya casi están listas para comer.
