Woodpecker in a polka-dot vest

Flickers are shy birds, but this one stopped in plain sight for a long drink.

Northern flicker, Colaptes auratus.

The red "mustache" identifies him as a male. He stood for a good while after each sip of water with his bill pointed upward, letting the water trickle down his throat. They call this the "Sip and Tilt" method, and it is the way most (but not all; watch a pigeon someday) birds swallow water. Gravity feed.

Although in the woodpecker family this bird is commonly known as the Northern Flicker.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
