It's dogwood flowering time. The spring edition; dogwood also flowers in the fall. In between times, it makes red berries.
Western Flowering Dogwood, Cornus nuttallii. With beetle. |
A tree full of blooms. |
The native dogwood is BC's Provincial flower, although it is found mainly on Vancouver Island and the edges of the fjords on the southwestern coast of the mainland, with a small extension along the lower Fraser River. (See entire BC Forestry map, here.) Its range also includes the western coast of the US.
Cropped portion of BC Forestry map. Green areas are the dogwood's range. |
The central flower head of a dogwood, some flowers open, with 4 petals. A few purplish marks. |
This one has only one flower open so far. |

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
