Cross section

A logging road cut through the forest exposes the layers that make up the land.

A green and brown layer cake

The soil and duff where the vegetation spreads its roots are a very thin coating on top of solid rock. Above them, mosses and dead wood. And reaching up to the sunlight, the trees, here small, thinned out after several cuttings.

And on the road beneath, elk scat.

The road was dry, the scat moist. I looked for hoofprints, but the road was hard; the only sign was where the elk stepped on his own scat.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
