Bill and croak

The Roberts Lake ravens snacked on my oatcakes, watched me for a while, then went back to their important conversation. Raven # 1 left his perch among the branches to sit beside his mate.

Raven # 2, the female, on the left.

And they chatted. "Croak, croak," said he. "Ding dong," said she.

I hadn't heard that song from a raven before. I searched for it on the web, and found one, two musical notes, the second one higher, repeated after an interval, in a recording made in Iceland, here. The recorder thinks the singer is the female: another site mentions the same bell-like song, naming the singer as the female, too.

Then they got serious:

A raven kiss.

This was repeated several times, then the male assumed a different pose:

Rubber-neck smooch

"Did I hear a camera click?"

And they spread their wings and headed out across the lake.

  1. If the Ravens show up here today I'm going to listen for their songs. I want to hear their "Croak croak. Ding dong" too!

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
