I spent a couple of hours watching birds in a friend's backyard today. It's a favourite bird hangout, full of berry-laden bushes, fruit trees and sunflowers, bird baths and a tray of peanuts. There were hummingbirds, a flicker, varied thrush, assorted LBBs, juncos and towhees and robins and starlings; and a woodpecker who stayed put on our side of the tree long enough to get photos!

|These are tiny woodpeckers, about 6.5 inches long, slightly bigger than a chickadee.|
Not many of my photos turned out, what with the distance (any time we stepped out onto the lawn, the birds flew away), the grey day, and a kit lens. No matter: it was a wonderful afternoon! I'll have a few more photos processed by tomorrow.
