Walking on water

I had planned to send these two photos to the Facebook page, The Worst Bird Photos Ever, but I think they may be interesting, so here they are.

Running takeoff

Hopping takeoff

Dabbling ducks, such as mallards, rely on their larger wings to take to the air almost vertically. The divers, such as these Harlequins, need to get up speed before they can fly. Loons are so slow that they may need up to a quarter mile (about 400 m.) to get airborne. I couldn't find distance requirements for harlequins.

  1. I wonder if individuals "specialize" in one pattern or mix the two.

    1. It looks like there's a difference in the angle that these are starting from. I'll have to watch more. It's an interesting question!

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
