Mystery crystals (and pink stuff)

Two weeks ago, taking photos of moss on the old landmark log, I happened to include some white translucent sticks; they looked more like ice crystals than anything else. Were they? I went back a week later; most of the snow had thawed, and there was no ice on the log. But the crystals were still there.

I looked again this afternoon. A warm afternoon; all the snow has gone, and the sun shone brightly. And the crystals were still there. Not ice, definitely. But what?

As they were a week ago.

And this afternoon, zooming in as close as I could get.

The clump is small; the largest "crystals" are about 5 mm. long. I touched them; they are hard, firmly attached, and as dry as anything around there is at this time. The moss feels wetter. I checked over the log, looking for more; I couldn't find any.

Comparing the two photos, I see that everything has stayed in the same spot, unmoving.

I had forgotten about the pink things, and didn't remember to bring a hand lens. I'll have to go back the next day it isn't raining. And bring tweezers to collect a crystal and a piece of pink stuff.

Any clues as to what this is?

Yo no.

Just wondering

 Why?

Why do people feel compelled to build precarious driftwood shelters on the beach?

A lot of work, a bit of shade, a menagerie of wooden beasts.

Why do dogs so love cold water, even when it's so chilly that people on the beach are wearing winter coats?

It even looks cold.

But he's so happy!

And this. Why, just why?

Pole with rocks from the breakwater. Oyster Bay far shore, a good 10 minutes walk from anything. Underwater at high tide.

Life is so full of mysteries!

Me pregunto: ¿Porqué?
