Roadside attraction

A few minutes after 5, half an hour after sundown. I was heading home when I saw a block of light brown beside the highway. And there was a wide shoulder; I immediately pulled off and stopped. In my rear-view mirror, I could see several of these shapes. Deer? No, too big. Elk!*

They lifted their heads to look at me, sitting there, decided I was harmless, and bent into the grasses again. I slowly, ever so slowly, backed and turned to face them. In the light of my headlights, still in low daylight mode, I could see four, still unworried although cars were rushing by only a few metres away. I took photos through the windshield, moved forward a half wheel turn, cautiously. Three of the elk moved down into the trees, but one just lifted her** head, looked me over, ducked down to eat again. Another photo. I moved forward again; again, she looked at me, decided I was harmless, went on eating. Repeat, repeat, always s.l.o.w.l.y.

I was quite near when I rolled down the window and took one photo. Without apparent haste, the elk turned and ducked behind the trees.

Through the windshield. Their manes get darker in winter. A cozy scarf against those chilly winds.

"As long as she stays in her wheely box, she's ok. I think."

First shot through the open window. By the next, her light rump was disappearing under the trees.

Sorry, girls**; I didn't mean to startle you. I waited, without moving. The four elks waited; I could see them between the branches. They didn't move off. So I did, backing up slowly until I was out of range, leaving them to return to browsing on roadside shrubs. It's their evening dinner hour.

*Cervus canadensis. Also known as wapiti.

**They were probably all females. Many of the males will still have antlers, shedding them a bit later in the spring. And the males are larger. All four of these were the same size.

Otra foto. Me adelanté otra vez; otra vez me miró, y volvió otra vez a su cena. Otra vez, y otra, siempre adelantándome poco a poco.

*Cervus canadensis. También se conocen como wapiti.

**Eran probablemente todas hembras.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
