More from the aquarium

I'm still sorting and processing photos from the aquarium after a repeat visit with a different lens on the camera. So much to see, so many new beasties to love! For a while, I watched, eye to eye with a large shrimp as he cleaned his legs one by one. No photos of this; I was using the wrong lens for that. And there was a crab waving long, blue mouthparts about; there will be a video of that. And more hermits, still unidentified.

And I have to go back to look at fish. Long, thin fish, prickly fish, sleek green fish, snaky fish ... Here's one I caught "walking".

Grunt sculpin, Rhamphocottus richardsonii

When I saw it, it was moving itself along the bottom of the tank, pushing with those spiny orange belly fins. This fish likes to hide out in giant acorn barnacle shells, mimicing the absent barnacle with its snout or tail fins.

Giant acorn barnacle, Balanus nubilus. Yes, the Grunt's tail does look like barnacle cirri.

Orange sea cucumber, Cucumaria miniata. With red and green sea urchins.

Orange swimming anemone, Stompha didemon. Yes, it swims, to escape the leather starfish.

Part of a colony of pink-tipped green anemones, Anthopleura elegantissima.

That blue-mouthed crab, tomorrow.

Sigo organizando y procesando fotos de las criaturas que vi en el acuario; hay más, porque regresé habiendo puesto otra lente en la cámara. ¡Tanto hay para ver allí; tantas criaturas nuevas encantadoras! Por un buen rato me quedé observando, ojo contra ojo, a un camarón grande mientras se limpiaba cada pata, concienzudamente. No hay fotos de esto; la lente que traía no servía en ese caso. Y hay un cangrejo que agita sus apéndices bucales, largos y muy azules; de eso tengo un video.  Y hubo más ermitaños, todavía sin identificar.

Y tengo que volver, para observar los peces. Peces larguísimos, delgados, peces con multitud de espinas, peces verdes, elegantes, peces que parecen ser víboras ... Aquí está uno que vi "caminando".

1. El charrasco gruñón, Rhamphocottus richardsonii. Cuando lo vi, se movía sobre el fondo del tanque, empujándose con esas espinas anaranjadas. Este pez se acostumbra esconder en las conchas vacías del bálano gigante; según se acomoda, o su boca o las espinas de su cola imitan el bálano ya desaparecido.
2. El bálano gigante, Balanus nubilus. Y por cierto, la cola del gruñon se parece a los cirros del bálano.
3. Pepino de mar anaranjado, Cucumaria miniata. Con erizos de mar rojo y verdes.
4. Una anémona natante, Stompha didemon. Y si, nada cuando se siente amenazada por una estrella de mar Dermasterias imbricata.
5. Y parte de una colonia de anémonas verdes con tentáculos color de rosa, Anthopleura elegantissima.

Ese cangrejo con la boca azul, mañana.
