Early birds

According to the calendar, we're in mid-winter; officially it runs from the end of December to the end of March. The plants in my garden and the huckleberries in the woods think it's spring. My bleeding hearts, in deep shade, surrounded by chilly concrete, have sent up enthusiastic pink sprouts. My pots of perennials are all over new leaves.

Last year, the first of the snowdrops were blooming the second week of March. Here they are, already in flower at the end of January:

Looks like they're huddled together for warmth. Just before sunset on a grey day.

Cast iron birds surrounded by crocus and hyacinth sprouts.

And those bleeding hearts, hidden away in the dark.

In the forest, the huckleberry stems are a strong green, their tiny buds red-tipped. My camera wanted to look at the trees beyond. Oh, well.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
