I've been disappointed this fall in my searches for mushrooms. But in this alder wood, when I was not looking for them, there they were. Small to teeny, and only two species, but there they were in abundance.
Almost pure white with a faint piecrust edge and pale brown stalks. |
These white mushrooms were everywhere. The ones in this photo were the largest, maybe 1 cm. across. The others? Too small to identify, usually too small even to get down to their level. Look:
Chilled and exposing their undersides on a fallen tree. |
They sprouted out of the trunk from top to bottom (now end to end). |
This tree still stands. And the mushrooms are more the usual colour. |
And a cluster of moss, for good measure. |
And I'm not done yet with that walk through the alder woods. More tomorrow.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
