Green and black

Shore crab carapace. No two ever alike.

He's a young male. His mate is a uniform dull green, about the colour of the background here.

I'll be busy for the next few days, and away from the blog.  Back Tuesday, I think.

  1. Oh, wow. I've never seen one like that. Is that the lined (or striped) shore crab (Pachygrapsus crassipes)?

  2. No, he's our common native shore crab, Hemigrapsus oregonensis, usually called just "green shore crab", but also the "Oregon shore crab", which name is probably less confusing, because we also have an invasive "green crab", the
    Carinus maenus.
This is ours, and this is the invader.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
