To eat or not to eat

 Some berries are good to eat, even delicious. Huckle-, thimble-, black-, straw-, service-, goose-: the berries that grow wild in and around our forests; mix and match and serve with ice cream or fill a pie. Or just eat as you walk the trail.

And then there are the others; be careful!

St. John's wort. Safe in small, infrequent doses, for some people.

Daphne, handle with care. And keep your dogs and cats away!

But the plants are beautiful. And Daphne is perfumed. And the birds eat the berries, the bees love the pollen. So there's that.

And then, there's these; look like berries, don't they?

Scarlet runner bean flower buds. These you can eat.

This plant is originally from Mexico, so of course, there are recipes; this one, for tacos de flor de bótil, uses the flowers.

Hay bayas o frutillas que se pueden comer con gusto, algunas deliciosas. Las llamadas "huckleberry", "thimbleberry", las moras, las fresas, las Saskatunes, las grosellas: todas crecen dentro o alrededor de nuestros bosques. Combínalas y sírvelas con helado, o en un pastel. O simplemente cómelas al encontrarlas mientras caminas en el bosque.

Pero hay otras; con estas, hay que tener cuidado.

1. Las bayas de la hierba de San Juan. Muy bonitas, y para algunas personas, en dosis pequeñas, no muy frecuentes, pueden ser ingeridos. Para los demás, no.
2. Las bayas de Dapne spp. Son tóxicas para humanos, y más para tu perro y tu gatito.

Pero las flores son lindas. Y las de Daphne son perfumadas. Y atraen a las abejas. Y a los pájaros les gustan las bayas. Son plantas buenas, después de todo.

• Y estas parecen bayas, pero no, son los botones de las judías escarlatas (ayocote o flor de bótil, o ejote: ¡esta planta, de origen mexicana, tiene tantos nombres!). Estas sí que se pueden comer. Aquí hay una receta mexicana.
