Sun-drenched cat-tails

Moving on from the wetlands; higher up in the hills, a path through a dry, mossy forest.

Cat-tail moss, Isothecium myosuroides. AKA mouse-tail moss, tree moss.

This moss coats trees and dangles from branches. Where the sunlight hits it, it glows a bright yellow; otherwise, it's a drab green. It prefers to grow on deciduous trees, which are less acidic than the conifers. 

Blowing in the wind

This is the best time of year to look at this moss, while the summer's crop of leaves are still in bud, and the sun can shine on the mossy branches. 

Here it's growing only on one side of the tree.

A nice, soft perch for a robin

In its habitat. A mix of deciduous and conifers; in the understory, salal, ferns, and huckleberry shrubs.

Dejando atrás los humedales, visité un bosque seco, donde los árboles están cubiertos de musgo cola de ratón, también conocido como musgo cola de gato, o musgo de los árboles.

Este musgo crece en los troncos, a veces cubriéndlos completamente, y cuelga de las ramas. Donde le tocan los rayos del sol luce un amarillo brillante; sin sol, es un verde pardo.

Crece por preferencia en los árboles de hoja caduca, ya que las coníferas son demasiado ácidos.

Esta es la temporada del año en que se observan mejor; todavía no salen las hojas del verano, y el sol los ilumina. Ya en el verano, están en sombra.
