Fuzzy log fungi

A fallen tree in the open forest is covered, top to roots, in crowded split-gill mushrooms, all well coated with blue-green algae.

Schizophyllum commune, with moss, salal, and a shoot of trailing blackberry.

The bulk of the mushroom, the mycelium, is inside the wood. It may have been there before the tree fell.

Green algae grows best in the deep shade at the bottom of the log.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
