While I was waiting, a week ago, for the mergansers to come out from behind the undergrowth, I turned to look at the tree beside me.
Just another bare alder. But look at the trunk! |
Columns of holes. Background blurred. |
Something has been eating that trunk and some of the branches, drilling holes in straight lines, one above the other.
Zooming in. |
Most of the lines go top to bottom, but a few, not as enthusiastic, cross horizontally or are spotted randomly.
What does this? A sapsucker! The Red-breasted Sapsucker, Sphyrapicus ruber, is a permanent resident in this area, in coastal forests from sea level to about 2000m. (This tree is at about 120 m. above sea level.)
The name, sapsucker, is a misnomer; the birds drill their wells into the bark, the sap fills them, and the sapsucker licks it up with its tongue, the way a cat drinks. The edges of their tongues are fringed, feathery; they hold the liquid like a sponge. (The cat's tongue has hooked spines.)

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
