Devil's matchstick

Beside the Upper Campbell Lake, the highway runs along the bottom of rocky cliffs, dotted with lichens and mosses. There, I discovered this tiny patch of black-topped matchsticks.

A closer look.

I examined a good length of rock face, and found only this one, tiny patch.

The surrounding lichens, Placopsis gelida, Common bullseye, I think.

With my fingertips to show the size.

The middle red arrow points to the licheny cliffs.

    I've never seen anything like this.It's very striking. OK-just looked it up and it seems not to grow in any places I've been!

    I have matchstick fungus on the cabin float logs, but the colours are tan with bright yellow-orange tops. - Margy
