Face-off

I'm still on the lookout for spiders for Arachtober.* I noticed this little one on my bathroom wall, just resting; there's nothing to catch and eat up there.

She is tiny, 2 or, at the most, 3 mm. long, fangs to spinnerets.

As soon as the flash went off, she woke up and turned to face the camera, head up, front legs waving. As I moved around, trying to get a closer shot, she kept turning with me, challenging me: "Bring it, big One-eye! I'm ready!"

In the staring contest, the camera won. After a half-dozen flashes, she gave up and turned to leave.

"What's the use? One-eye didn't look good to eat, anyhow!"

When I went back an hour later, she was gone, back to the cracks and crannies where baby sowbugs hide. There's good eating on a sowbug!

*12 days to go; 17 spider pics. I only have 11.

Egg and duck and frog and ... dog

Update on 36 photos of an egg:

Hugh, at Rock, Paper, Lizard, has posted "somewhat fewer than 36"* on the Flickr group page. He had to stop at 10, because, he says, "the dog ate the egg."

Now, why does that sound familiar? Any schoolteachers out there? What do you think?

36 Photos of an egg

Looking for photos of lugworms (for my next post), I re-discovered WaveLength Magazine, a kayaker's mag. The lugworm page was not what I wanted, but "leafing" through back issues, I found this interesting photography assignment:

"Before you leave on your next trip, you should take 36 photos of an egg."

An egg? Why an egg?

The idea, I gather, is to force you to think of new ways to portray your subject. One or two photos won't do the trick; getting 36 different shots of the same simple object just may. Check out their article.

I immediately had to try it out. I took 36 shots of one egg. Half were duds, but looking them over, I thought of new ways I could tackle the assignment, so I'm going to do another 36.

And, before I post any of my results, I want to pass the assignment on:

"Think about an egg. An egg can represent many things. Whiteness, fragility, birth, food, purity, growth—these are some themes of “eggness.” Your assignment: take 36 different pictures of that egg. There are no other rules. Better yet, get a couple of friends to do the same exercise, and share your results."
