Fooled again!

I just learned that trilliums have no leaves. Look at them!

Don't those look like leaves? Big, show-off leaves? They do to me! But ...

Trillium plants produce no true leaves or stems above ground. The “stem” is actually just an extension of the horizontal rhizome and produces tiny, scalelike leaves (cataphylls). The above-ground plant is technically a flowering scape, and the leaf-like structures are actually bracts subtending the flower. Despite their morphological origins, the bracts have external and internal structure similar to that of a leaf, function in photosynthesis, and most authors refer to them as leaves. So what I'm looking at here is a three-petalled flower with three skinny sepals and three huge bracts. And not visible, hiding somewhere down below, three (I assume) tiny, tinier leaves. Got it.

Acabo de leer que los trilios no tienen hojas. Pues, míralos.

1. Dos trilios, uno abierto, el segundo en forma de taco. Y ¿esas cosas; no parecen ser hojas? ¡Tienen la cara de hojas, creo! Pero ... 
   
   Las plantas de Trillium no producen hojas verdaderas ni tampoco tallos fuera de la tierra. El "tallo" es, en verdad, solamente una prolongación del rizoma horizontal, y produce hojas miniaturas, como escamas (catáfilos). La planta que se presenta en el aire es, desde el punto de vista científico, un escapo floral, y las estructuras que parecen hojas en verdad son brácteas que rodean la flor. A pesar de sus orígenes morfológicos, las brácteas tienen estructuras externas e internas parecidas a las de una hoja, llevan a cabo el fotosíntesis, y la mayoría de los autores las llaman hojas.

2. Un trilio nuevo, con un insecto.
   
   Así que lo que veo aquí es una flor con tres pétalos y tres sépalos delgados y tres brácteas grandes. E invisibles, escondidas en alguna parte, tres (creo) hojitas miniaturas. Entiendido. 
   
   
3. Un grupo de trilios recién abiertos y algunos botones.
4. Otro, con bichitos de patas largas. Y sin hojas, recuerda.

La Madre Naturaleza nunca, pero nunca, sigue ni sus propias reglas.
