I was planting scarlet runner bean seedlings along a sunny wall, when I saw this spider, matching the future colour of the scarlet runner flowers. She was already running for cover, and disappeared down a crack. I went for the camera and came back to wait for her.
After a while, she came out into the sunlight again, timidly, at first.
Johnson's Jumping spider, Phidippus johnsoni, female |
Look at those turquoise fangs!
Giving me the side eye. |
She has eight eyes: four in front, two tiny ones on the side of her head that look at the world in black and white, and two slightly larger ones farther back; these let her see what's happening behind her back. (I could have used a pair of those sometimes!)
Looking me square in the eye. |
And then I moved again, trying to adjust the manual focus on the camera. That was too much for her; she scooted back down her crack, and I went back to my gardening.

(¡Yo hubiera querido tener unos a veces!)

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
