Standing tall

 I stopped in at the museum again. The lawn was speckled with tiny, white mushrooms. And a few whoppers.

I've seen these mushrooms on this short stump before, but never as tall as this one. It measured a bit over 15 cm (6 inches), measuring by my hand, fingertip to wrist, along the short side.

On the far side of the same stump, a cluster has gone dark and soggy with age.

And soon they'll be a mass of black mush.

Of course, these mushrooms are just the fruiting bodies of the fungus. The bulk of it, the mycelium, permeates the wood of this stump, producing year in and year out, a new crop of 'shrooms around the edge. I'll look for them here again next fall.

Visité otra vez los jardines del museo. El césped ahora está salpicada con honguitos muy pequeños, blancos. Y también hay unos grandotes:

1. Tres hongos con laminillas brotando desde un tocón. He visto estos hongos en el mismo tocón en años anteriores, pero nunca tan grandes. Éste, midiéndolo contra mi mano, desde las puntas de los dedos hasta la muñeca, llega a 15 cm. (6 pulgadas), esto en el lado corto.
2. En el otro lado del tocón, un grupo de hongos se ha vuelto oscuros y pastosos con la edad. En poco tiempo, llegarán a constituir una masa negra, sin forma.

Estos hongos, ciertamente, son solamente una parte del hongo entero, los cuerpos fructíferos. La mayor parte del hongo, el micelio, llena la madera del tocón y produce año tras año nuevos brotes de los hongos que vemos. Los buscaré aquí otra vez en el otoño de 2024.
