Caves in bark

Three dead trees standing together are pock-marked, top to bottom, by small caves, pinhole-sized to a few inches across. And each cave has a floor of fine sawdust.

Ant housing development?

Zooming in. Caves behind caves.

Cave or tunnel entrance?

I've visited the trees several times, looking for residents. What I've found, so far, I'll post tomorrow.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
