Chacun à son goût

In shady, moist woods near the river's edge, small flowers hide under leaves or stand above them, according to their individual personalities.

The shy ones:

Twisted stalk, Streptopus amplexifolius. The flowers hang their heads modestly, under cover of the leaves.

And the show-offs:

Broad-leaved starflower, Trientalis latifolia. The flowers stand on tiny stalks, seeming to float above the leaves.

The species name of each of these refers to the leaves (folia, folius). S. amplexifolius: amplexi- means "clasping", because of the way the leaves hold onto the stalk. T. latifolia: lati- means "broad", distinguishing these from other starflowers with smaller leaves.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
En un bosque lluvioso, en sombra, unas florecitas o se esconden bajo las hojas, o levantan la cara a la luz, según su propia carácter.
Las tímidas (foto # 1) "Tallo torcido", Streptopus amplexifolius. Las flores cuelgan fuera de la vista.
Y las descaradas: "Flor estrella de hoja ancha", Trientalis latifolia. Cada flor se erige sobre un tallo delgado, pareciendo flotar en el aire arriba de la base.
El nombre de especie de estas dos se refiere a la forma de las hojas. S. amplexifolius — amplexi- significa "abrazar, agarrar", por la manera en que la hoja se fija al tallo. T. latifolia — lati- quiere decir "ancho", para distinguir esta especie de otras flores estrella con hojas pequeñas.
I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
