A flock of mallards hangs out in the quiet backwaters of the estuary. When the tide is low, they sleep on long, grassy mudbanks well off-shore; at high tide they move into the sheltered water between the bird blind's islet and the shore. Not to sleep; there they swim about idly or look for goodies among the half-drowned shrubbery. The other afternoon, they were also busy courting.

The courting dance. |
This pair was performing a synchronized head-bobbing ritual. Facing each other, each one alternately would duck and raise their head; here the male is in the "humble" position while she stretches out her neck to its fullest length. Next, she lowers her head, while he towers over her. And repeat, taking turns.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
