These shelf fungi are black

Black. Midnight black. Shined shoe leather black.

Black polypores dwarfing the stump they're growing on.

I think this may be a Ganoderma sp., but any photos I find of them on the web are labelled only "Black bracket fungus". They seem to have a pale lip, maybe the edge of a light underside, but I couldn't get close enough to see that.

  1. I've never seen the black variety of shelf fungus. I'll have to keep an eye out for it. - Margy

I have found huge shelf polypore mushrooms with dark brown or black flesh here in the Willamette forest in Oregon. I thought they were Ganoderma Oregonese but the flesh is a different color from others I find. I am not ready to make tincture or tea with the darker fleshed ones until I can be more confident in identification. Also a heavy brown dust on the top of them.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
