Not a sunfish

They call it convergent evolution when two organisms that lack a recent common ancestor develop similar structures as they have adapted to a similar ecological niche. Like birds and bats and fruit flies; unrelated, but they all have wings. Or octopus eyes and ours.

And then there are the also-rans; these almost look like sea creatures, purple sunflower stars, maybe. But grown on stalks. In the garden. And they don't eat the flowers growing around them.

Orange poppies with purple "sunfish".

Intense colours, reminiscent of the 1970s.

Back to aquarium photos tomorrow.

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
