I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.

I like your idea of the home-made macro attachment. I have a Canon S5 IS with SUPER-Macro and it lets me put the lens so close that it is touching the (insect.)
