I took too many photos. Every few steps along the trail at Buttle Lake, there was something interesting to stop and look at, made worse because I went back to dig up some of that pink stuff — it was grass, by the way, and now there's a small clump growing on my windowsill. It has turned green in the warmth; Buttle Lake, higher up, far from the warming ocean, is colder than here; does that explain the pinkness?
Anyhow, I took more photos, and walked down a couple more trails and stopped to have lunch in Sundew Bog, and since then have been sorting photos and posting them to iNaturalist and BugGuide and leafing through guidebooks and online images and sorting photos ...
For starters, here are a few photos of pinesaps, Hipopitys monotropa.

I saw one by the side of the trail. Then another down in the moss, then suddenly I was seeing them everywhere. |

The species name, monotropa means: mono = one, tropa = direction, (because all the flowers bend the same way). |

I'm having to moderate all comments because Blogger seems to have a problem notifying me. Sorry about that. I will review them several times daily, though, until this issue is fixed.
Also, I have word verification on, because I found out that not only do I get spam without it, but it gets passed on to anyone commenting in that thread. Not cool!
